Question - TE25 - Template Mods? No.29442
jofas  2002-10-15 20:26:43 ( ID:mkennyztt9l )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

I've successfully created new wizard templates for MPEG-1 encoding (different bitrates for different length vcd)

Is there a web site or any FAQ about all the fields in TMPGEnc template file?

Specifically, I want to enable VBR encoding in MPEG-1 files. (to all nay-sayers, YES, it CAN be done.)

thanx in advance,
Jofas

Minion  2002-10-15 21:35:43 ( ID:w8yn5mktf8w )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

I don"t really understand what your problem is...it is just as easy to make a template with VBR or any setting for that matter...you just load the "Unlock.mcf" template then change all the settings to what you want then click "Save" then give your template a name and save it in the templates folder ..and when you want to use it you just open up Tmpgenc and load in your file(no wizard it"s for Newbies) click load and choose your template and that is IT....

If you know were to look everything is free...a cheap and easy one to use is Mpeg2VCR but it has a habbit of makeing edited files with a lot of extra padding, and m2-edit pro 5 is a good one that I use but it is hard to find and it costs $1500...try going to here: h**p://www.apachez.net/ .....

Question - TE25 - Best Version?? No.29428
jofas  2002-10-15 20:10:01 ( ID:mkennyztt9l )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

I'm currently using 2.58, but I've noticed
some people don't like it.

Which version is currently seen as most stable/productive?

and Why??

ASHY  2002-10-16 00:00:02 ( ID:n3gjkhi6dvc )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

2.58 is buggy.
2.57 is fine (mostly except for MPEG2 codec usage change)
2.56 is better.

ASHY

wcpaul  2002-10-16 01:47:27 ( ID:q7gr550x3gw )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Keep a copy of 2.56 around. It lets you read mpeg with any Directshow codec. The Ulead codec, for example, is compatible and handles 4:2:2P formats properly. Ligos screws up 4:2:2 (I don't have Sony or Cyberlink to try out).

graphedit can tell you exactly what codec Directshow has selected. Program installations can change codec priorities and uninstall rarely corrects it. This type of uncertainty is part of why TMPG went to the 2.57 scheme (which reduces flexibility for advanced users). Here are example .bat files for codec management:

:: Install a codec (usually a .ax file, sometimes a .dll file)
regsvr32 /S "path_to_file.ax"

:: Uninstall a codec
regsvr32 /U /S "path_to_file.ax"

Minion  2002-10-16 07:56:31 ( ID:w8yn5mktf8w )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

You Can still use these versions to read Mpeg2 through Direct show but you need the M2V-Vfp Plugin The plugin shows up in the plugin list and I was able to read Mpeg2 files with it by dissableing the ligos and cyberlink filters...

B_Racer  2002-10-16 13:45:33 ( ID:gxmkoa4dlnj )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

The best Way, to put MPEG2 into TMPGEnc ist to use a d2v-File, created bei DVD2AVI. Because it uses the bestest MPEG-Decoder (refference-class), ever written, much better than any DirectShow-Filter or the shitty M2V-Vfp Plugin.

ASHY  2002-10-16 18:18:55 ( ID:n3gjkhi6dvc )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

The M2V-Vfp Plugin may work, but it decodes far too slow.

Question - TE25 - What next? No.29423
ABS  2002-10-15 19:28:23 ( ID:tmdsptwfkem )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Hi,

I would like to write another article for my site: http://www.geocities.com/mpegobsession/

I would like to know which of the following you think I should do:
1) Quantize Matrix (How it works + suggestions)
2) MPEG2 import: DVD2AVI vs. MPEG2 VFAPI Plugin vs. Ligos MPEG2 using Direct show
3) Tips for PAL video

Or if you have any sugestion...

Thanks!
ABS

jofas  2002-10-15 20:40:42 ( ID:mkennyztt9l )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

actually, all three seem interesting.

why not do em all??

Marc  2002-10-15 21:12:01 ( ID:m8b9qxujdzn )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

There's a lot to learn on this subject. Very interesting.
What is difficult is how to use the different VBR encoding
schemes, framerate conversion and capturing and encoding
VCR tapes to MPEG.

Succes,

Marc

Ps: I am not an expert in the video scene, questions on
audio, no probem.

B_Racer  2002-10-16 13:57:04 ( ID:gxmkoa4dlnj )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

1) Quantize Matrix (How it works + suggestions)

Uff, first you have to learn, what the DCT is. It's important to know that if you want to know, what a Quantize Matrix realy does.
The Short Version: The DCT konverts a Block of 8x8 Pixels into an Frequency-Image.
http://www-mtl.mit.edu/Courses/6.095/spring-00/unit3/dct.html

The Matrix than uses this "picture" to put away the higher frequencies.
http://rnvs.informatik.tu-chemnitz.de/~jan/MPEG/HTML/mpeg_tech.html

Hope that helps, my english is not good enough to explain this by myself.

2) MPEG2 import: DVD2AVI vs. MPEG2 VFAPI Plugin vs. Ligos MPEG2 using Direct show

DVD2AVI is unbeatable, because it uses an quality-optimized Reffernce-Decoder.
DirectShow-Filters are optimized for speed, not for Quality.

3) Tips for PAL video

Waht kind of Tips?

ABS  2002-10-16 17:51:03 ( ID:tmdsptwfkem )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

B_Racer,

1) I know how DCT works and all involved so no problem there, I wouldn't have sugested if I didn't fully understand it...

2) DVD2AVI has few disadavteges compearing to the MPEG2 VFAPI plugin, just something to really show the difference...

3) Few things I learned that can help getting higher quality... Not much on that subject...

4) If you have any idea for article, you are welcomed to sugest...

Question - TE25 - how to split audio to separate channel ??? No.29420
ch  2002-10-15 16:52:53 ( ID:x.rmf5quc.f )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

I have the following audio stream

test_stereo.mp2

and I want to split to

test_mono_left_channel.mp2
test_mono_right_channel.mp2

can I do this in tmpgenc or is there any
software which can do that ???

ASHY  2002-10-16 00:12:04 ( ID:n3gjkhi6dvc )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

I don't understand your question. Mono is L + R channels combined into a single channel and then outputted to both L + R.
If you want a mono output just choose mono in the audio settings.
If you are saying you wish to have two completely seperate L + R channels then
Dual channel should give you two completly seperate L + R channels.

ASHY

ASHY  2002-10-16 00:17:47 ( ID:n3gjkhi6dvc )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Or if you are simply trying to split the stereo signal into seperate L + R channels then most audio editing software can do this. Soundforge, Cooledit, Goldwave.

Use an audio editor.

After you've got the MP2 file, open it up in your favorite audio editor (I use Cooledit Pro) and split the channels.

Hi,

does anybody know how to convert an Mpeg-2 File into an Mpeg-1 file using only tmpgenc ? Or do i need another programm ?

Thanks in advance

Gregor

lupy  2002-10-15 16:31:32 ( ID:o10nietw26a )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

why don't u try? after all tmpgenc is free for mpg1 encoding and u get 30 days on mpg2 encoding which u r not doing anyway...

Minion  2002-10-15 21:25:59 ( ID:w8yn5mktf8w )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Yes you can encode Mpeg2 to mpeg1 but you need the Cyberlink ligos or sony mpeg2 decoders installed...and it is a good idea to De-Mux the mpeg2 file then just encode the video to mpeg1 then mux the audio to the video....

Question - TE25 - AVI Video Source Aspect Ratio No.29406
Marc  2002-10-15 14:50:57 ( ID:m8b9qxujdzn )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Hi,

Why is it impossible to select VCD or SVCD source aspect ratio's in
the "Select Source File" menu. Loads of AVI files have 353x288 or
480x576 sizes. These are not selectable.

Thanks,

Marc

B_Racer  2002-10-15 15:50:28 ( ID:gxmkoa4dlnj )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

What do you mean? Both Resolution are 4:3 Ratios (PAL). So there's no need for more confusing Settings.

Marc  2002-10-15 17:46:00 ( ID:m8b9qxujdzn )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

352/288=1.22
480/576=0.8

This is not 1.33

I mean that loads of AVI files have strange ratio's. Sometimes
the sizes I mentioned. Otherwise you always have to resize the
movie.

Marc

Minion  2002-10-15 21:24:06 ( ID:w8yn5mktf8w )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

The source aspect ratio is not determined by You, but by your File, so changeing the source aspect ratio would be a Useless procedure because you would be changeing the what the real aspect ratio is...If you want to keep the same aspect ration as the source file choose the 1:1 aspect ratio as the out put ratio...and to change the settings you need to load the "Unlock.mfc" template....

ASHY  2002-10-15 23:32:33 ( ID:n3gjkhi6dvc )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

I agree with B_Racer.
What's the problem both ratios are 4:3.
352x288 is a 4:3 PAL resolution and 480x576 is an SVCD MPEG2 resolution and any encoding program should recognize the SVCD flag and the aspect ratio as 4:3.

ASHY

Marc  2002-10-16 18:55:04 ( ID:m8b9qxujdzn )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Ok thank you. The stange sizes of VCD and SVCD are
sometimes confusing, and I did'nt know that they
will be reconized automaticly.

Marc

Question - TE25 - calculate the size No.29403
Solan  2002-10-15 12:57:07 ( ID:/j/voji9k9f )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

How can I easily calculate the size of the svcd I will convert?
I want to make to 700mb svcd movie files. How can I set up Tmpgenc, so it wont make bigger files?

ASHY  2002-10-15 13:20:20 ( ID:4adzcnohuc. )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Download a bitrate calculator.

ASHY

jofas  2002-10-15 19:31:18 ( ID:mkennyztt9l )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Depends how much quality per disc space you want.

By default, an SVCD is 2520 Mbps and yields about 42 min on 700MB disc.
If you drop the quality of the video, however, to 1750 Mbps, you should be able to get about an hour, and so on.

And yes, you should get a bitrate calculator.

Question - TE25 - VBV Buffer size optimization No.29400
Solan  2002-10-15 12:52:54 ( ID:/j/voji9k9f )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

What does the "VBV buffer size optimization" do? When should I use it?

ASHY  2002-10-15 13:39:46 ( ID:n3gjkhi6dvc )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

>"VBV buffer size optimization"
Where the hell does this setting exist?

I haven't noticed a setting for this.
It is possible adjust the VBV buffer size under the 'advanced' tab, but I'm not sure about the 'optimization' setting you are referring to.

If you simply mean 'What does the VBV buffer setting do' and are not referring to an actual 'optimization' setting then to put it *VERY* simply this setting tells your decoder which buffer setting to use.

MPEG files with different bitrates need different buffer settings.
The wrong buffer setting can affect the playback of your file.
In most cases if you are using a TMPG template you should have no problem with the set VBV buffer settings.
In genearal higher bitrates need higher buffer settings.
If you choose you can let TMPG decide the setting by changing it to '0'(automatic)'

I'm not going to go into detail about this (as I have before) it's a far to complicated subject and takes ages to explain the fundamentals of it.
If you search on google you should get some info. You may also find some info if you use the search button above.

ASHY

B_Racer  2002-10-15 15:53:24 ( ID:gxmkoa4dlnj )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

TMPGEnc 0.11 had this Feature, but it produced Double MPEG-Headers (non compliant Streams).
If he really want to change die VBV-Buffer, he should try MPlex, the Multiplexer included in TSCV.
