Question - TE25 - File too big No.29497
simboy  2002-10-16 21:15:13 ( ID:5ir4.k1a95h )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Hi to all the expert on this forum. I'm coverting an AVI movie to Mpeg using TMPG 2.58 many times and now I encounter an AVI movie of 630mb that will output to 2.2gb Mpeg. I have convert many AVI movies of 600++ mb but none of them ever has an output of 2.2gb. I suspect that the movie itelf is coded with some anti convert/output code so that viewer cannot convert them to Mpeg. This movie is downloaded from Kazza and I suspect the source could come from one of those Commercial DixV site that rent movie. Is that so? Can any of you please help! I wish to convert to VCD and watch it on TV. Thanks.

Minion  2002-10-16 21:34:45 ( ID:w8yn5mktf8w )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

a 2.3GB mpeg file is about 2 hours of SVCD or about 3.5-4 hours of VCD at standard bitrates...The size of the Mpeg file has nothing to do with the Size of the AVI file, it has to do with the Length of the file, and standard VCD Bitrates a minute of Mpeg is 10MB and about 20MB for SVCD...There is no Anti Converting Codec for AVI files that will make the file huge...You either have a high bitrate or the Mpeg file could have extra Dead space at the end of the file, scan through the file and see if it is the same length as the avi file, and get a Bitrate Viewer to see the actuall bitrate of the mpeg file and see if it the same bitrate as you set it in Tmpgenc...

simboy  2002-10-17 21:35:14 ( ID:5ir4.k1a95h )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

I must thank minion for his time and effort to help us in this forum sincerely..without someone like him. It take us lot of time to investigate problems and find solution for it. I'm still pretty new in this so I'm trying to catch up too.

Minion, I loaded the Avi movie using the Tmpg standard VCD template. Bitrate at 1150 (constant bitrate). So I normally will get about 10mb for 1 min. However, this movie that I haven't encode it yet. shows about 2.2 GB at the end of the template. I thought something was wrong with TMPG (corrupted or what) so I used an old avi movie that I coded before and it turn up to 1min = 10Mb. So I think I will try to code the movie and see what comes up. Perhaps u could advice if u know the problem. Thanks a million Minion. I haven't got the bitrate calculator yet but I will try to download it. Thanks again.

Question - TE25 - I frames?? No.29493
Jofas  2002-10-16 19:23:54 ( ID:mkennyztt9l )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

When using VirtualDub, you can tell what type of frame you're on.

I know that when encoding non-standard VCDs and SVCDs, it's a good idea to begin the MPEG file with a frame that was an I frame in the original file.

Is there any way to know what type of frame one is on when using source range tool? I know that MPEG will reencode frame id at beginning and end of new MPEG file, or maybe I am misunderstanding?

Anyway, my problem is that sometimes MPEG output files encoded in non-standard bitrates have a pile of the same frame (100 or so) at the beginning and/or end of the file. I know it's not my standalone DVD player because the file appears "paused" for a few seconds using any software player too.

Is starting with an I frame the problem?

The problem only occurs when dealing with original 1.4 or 1.5 GB files. Also seems difficult to scroll around in the file in TMPGEnc source range. I dunno.

Help or advice, pls.

Minion  2002-10-16 21:39:35 ( ID:w8yn5mktf8w )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

I don"t really understand your problem ..But heres a little info on I frames...When editing or joining a mpeg file it has to be edited or joined on an I frame and when encodeing and the encoder detects a scene change it inserts an I frame...Generally speaking in a mpeg file should Not have a bunch of I frames Repeating in a row...You can find out the GOP structuse of your file by Useing a Bitrate Viewer...

jofas  2002-10-16 21:56:08 ( ID:mkennyztt9l )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

I like that bitrate viewer, but how can I tell wheter I'm on an I frame in TMPGEnc?

I'm not gonna start source range encoding a whole movie into two files only to have to use another program to start and end each one with I frames.

There must be some way to tell in TMPGEnc or at least make sure that the start and end frames are I frames.

Minion  2002-10-17 21:31:06 ( ID:w8yn5mktf8w )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

If you look in the "GOP" tab you can see what the GOP structure is set to, and the default setting starts with an I frame...so don"t worry about it...

Question - TE25 - how do I turn avi files into the mpegs I download? No.29488
help  2002-10-16 19:19:43 ( ID:o/h4imk1iwr )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

when I download an mpeg the picture is so bright and clean (vhs quality), and when I download a avi...it of couse looks nothing like the mpeg files. Can someone tell me how to turn these horrible files into the best picture I can with this program. Please step by step this for me so I can in way shape or form screw this up

Jofas  2002-10-16 20:00:04 ( ID:mkennyztt9l )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

First, I assume that you're using the wizard template, but it doesn't matter.

In the main window, you can access more settings with the "Setting" button.
In the wizard, it's when you get to the source range/clip frame/noise reduction window and is called "Other Settings".

When you open either one, a window called "MPEG Setting" with a bunch of tabs will appear. Under the "advanced" tab there is a check box called "simple color correction" Check it and double-click it to change the settings. play with the contrast and brightness to get what you want

This will not help if the corrupted, a poor quality rip or low resolution, though.

hope that helps.

Minion  2002-10-16 21:23:14 ( ID:w8yn5mktf8w )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

It is true if the File is of Bad Quality there is nothing you can do to Make it look better...But if it is just a case of Being to dark or haveing the color off this can be fixed but with Mpeg encodeing Garbage in is Garbage out...

teepee  2002-10-17 09:56:46 ( ID:hopuwio3fbn )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

The typical all beginner¡s avi-from-web question...

Download a 50 minutes mpeg2 in good quality and it has to be 800+ Megs,
download a 50 minutes avi (DivX or kinda that) it has to be 350+ Megs.

Less is crap and therefore waste of time.

Total crap in. Total crap out, but probably larger sized crap out.

Stick to DVD ripping and you won't look back.

Please help, I am very new to encoding, but have managed to create a mpeg1 file from an AVI source file. Please can you tell me how to convert AVI to MPEG2, using TMPGEnc, so I can create a SVCD? many thanks Mac

Jofas  2002-10-16 18:50:53 ( ID:mkennyztt9l )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Use the wizard template for SVCD and just follow the steps.

thats it.

Mac  2002-10-17 13:19:00 ( ID:8yfrh0k0y/a )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

thank you for the reply. I have created an MPEG2 file, but it is 1.5Gb! I noticed in another question it was suggested to download a bitrate calculator, to make the file size smaller. I am in the process of doing that.

A couple of questions please..
how do i encode MPEG2 without the wizard? (so i can change the bitrate)
how do i change the bitrate?

Thank you for your patience, and for being an invaluable source of information in my learning curve.

Mac

Minion  2002-10-17 21:54:28 ( ID:w8yn5mktf8w )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

How to encode without the WiZard??? Well run Tmpgenc Turn off the WiZarD, then load your file in on the main screen, click the "Load" tab and look for the "Unlock.mfc" Template and Choose it(this will let you change the bitrate) now go into "Settings" and set them to what you want...

Mac  2002-10-18 06:55:53 ( ID:8yfrh0k0y/a )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Thanks again - I now have an Mpeg2 file at 1.3Gb, the only problem I have now is that when I try to cut the file, TMPGEnc delivers the message "Cannot open file with direct show". Any ideas of where I went wrong?

Thanks in advance,

Mac

Here: http://www.digital-digest.com/dvd/downloads/encoding_plugin.html
Download the file called: VOB Filters 1.04

You must use this codec with version 2.58.

Many thanks Ashy, it works brilliantly. Mac

One final question (before I go and try and use what I've learnt), pls forgive me if its stupid.

When an Mpeg2 file is encoded to SVCD, does the file size change? i.e. if i encode a 650mb Mpeg2 file, will it become larger?

Thanks to one and all,

Mac

ASHY  2002-10-19 17:41:40 ( ID:n3gjkhi6dvc )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

It depends on the bitrate you use. AVI's usually have a better compression ratios, so you can use the same bitrates as MPEG, but with higher quality.

For instance a 1500 kb/s AVi will be the same size as a 1500 kb/s MPEG, but the AVI will be of higher quality due to it's better compression ratio.
To acheive the same quality in the MPEG as the AVI the bitrate would have to be almost double thus giving 3000 kb/s.

So to answer your question when regarding AVI's, if you want almost the same quality out as you put in then you are going to get bigger file sizes.

>When an Mpeg2 file is encoded to SVCD, does the file size change? i.e. if i encode a 650mb Mpeg2 file, will it become larger?

If your input is MPEG2 and you encode to the same bitrate then the file size will stay the same, but depending on the parameters you set such as resolution, the file could be worse quality than the original.
Why would you want to re-encode the MPEG2 anyway? It is already in the correct format.

Hi.

Just wondering if there is any reason why when loading a TMPGTEMPLATE,TXT file that was generated by IfoEdit, it would freeze? Is this function operational yet?

By "Freeze" I mean 99% CPU usage and no disk usage. It stays like that for at least 20 minutes.

Thanks - Specul8

I don't know about 20 mins but I know from other people who use it that it takes quite a long time to load the template. I haven't actually used one my self yet, but It does work apparantly.

Try following:

Split video and audio file with Virtual Dub and Gold Wave. Then put together again with TMPGEnc and you have a great VCD/SVCD.

The problems lie in the Mysteries of the universe, the Mpeg tools are Just Very Buggy and when they don"t want to work for a Particular file there is nothing you can do to make them work, so the best solution is to use a different Mpeg editor....

Have you tried just using "source range"?

Just pick the areas you want to encode.

That should resolve the problem.

most avi or divx files have 48000 hz audio.Use virtual dub to covert audio to 44000 uncompressed wave file. Also check vcdhelp.com there are many tools there that you can use. For instance some divx movies have ac3 audio that can be tricky to convert. Good Luck!

Marc,

You say you know about Audio, so I was wondering, what MP2 encoder are you using? I'm using toolame, but the problem is that it doesn't let me use Phychoacoustic mode #2, which should give better quality... Whenever I try using it the program simply crashes... Any ideas?
