When burning DVD's using the Tmpgenc DVD Authoring program the option for my "write speed" is set to "max" and is greyed out. Is this normal? I would prefer to burn at a lower speed (2x or so) for possibly better quality
TMPGEnc DVD Author crops menus. The menu I make in the menu editor is perfectly centered (sometimes text just barely fits on the screen) but when I play the DVD in a player, a column of approximately 30 pixels in width is not present on the far right of the screen (in most burns -- in others, it's a row at the top of the screen of like dimensions), omitting a letter that would have been close to flush with the far right of the screen had the burn been done correctly.
In addition, this phenomenon also appears to affect the DVD movie itself (!), as, for example, long names that were once centered in the credits are now slightly skewed to the right.
That's not a problem of TDA. That's absolutly normal. Any TV do have an aray called Overscan which can't be used for Videoinformations.
If you are using the Menu-Template, TDA will do it the correct way. If you use edited Menus, go to Options -> Show TV safe Area.
If you have cropped Videos, then you might have done a wrong encoding (wrong AR or something else).
You say "If you are using the Menu-Template, TDA will do it the correct way." -- does this mean that the preset templates are set to "TV-Safe" but if I create my own template, I have to pay attention to TV-Safe when making it, but in later sessions when select it from the drop-down menu, it will work properly?
One other thing about "TV-Safe..." Since (I'd imagine) most DVD's are going to be played on a DVD player -- and on a TV -- this option should be enabled by default in some manner, in my opinion.

Yes, you have to pay attention to it. That's because all DVD-Authoring Tools do offer you an option to show you the TV safe Area.
Once created, you own Templates do work propper - if you have done it the right way.
Oh, i sometimes use the Overscan-Area for hidden Buttons. ;)
I am having this problem too. I understand the TV safe reason for having with the menus, but I am seeing even more cropping than should result from that. Also, the video itself is cropped. I have tried encoding with a variety of things and used a variety of different videos; all have this problem. Any ideas?
I've got a seven second clip separated into M2v and AVI files. The AVI is LPCM. Now I run the AVI through the AC-3 encoder of TMPGEnc DVD author with AC-3 plugin.
This produces a AC3 file. I now take the M2V and AC3 files and multiplex them back together to create a short MPG file. This seems to play quite happily on WinMedia player.
Now I use this MPG file as the background for a motion menu in TMPGenc DVD author (I've got it set to always convert MP2 and LPCM files to AC-3) and all goes according to plan except that when I burn the DVD to disc and play it, the motion menu comes up saying it's still PCM sound. The main files are all AC-3, but not the motion menu, which should be seeing as I multiplexed an AC-3 file into it!
What am I doing wrong? Does the act of mutiplexing convert it back to PCM sound?
Yeah, I read that after I wrote the post. What's up with that? It even goes to the trouble of converting AC-3 to PCM just for menu background sound. Why not just let the AC-3 sound through, or better yet, convert PCM or MPEG to AC-3 like it does for the main tracks? Seems ridiculous to me.
I think Pegasys needs to sort that out pretty damn soon!
Did you ever see a DVD with AC3-Sound while playing the Menus? No? The reason is, there are no DVDs like that.
AC3 can not be used as Background-Sound for Menus, that's not a bug in TDA.
Actually, I went and checked a half dozen commercial DVDs and every one of them brought up Dolby Digital 2.0 sound while the menus played, according to my Sony AV amplifier.
The short company puff pieces, such as the Paramount Logo, were in DD 5.1 on a few of them, while the main progs were in DD5.1 or DTS. Not a single one had PCM as its menu sound system, or anywhere else for that matter. These were all NTSC R1 DVDs, by the way.
Yeah, NTSC do have it's own rules. All of my PAL DVDs do have MP2- or PCM-Sound as sound system in the Menus.
But what's your Problem? There's no need for using AC3 als Menu sound format - even in the NTSC-World.
If checked it. Only the very expensive Tools like Scenarist are able to use AC3 in Menus. DVDLab is able to that too, but in this Application, all Sound formats on a single Disc have to be the same Type. So if you use AC3 2.0 in the Menu, the Movie also has to have AC3 2.0 only.
No problem really, it just would have been neater is all. PCM sound for the menus is perfectly fine, it just seems a silly omission that once you have the AC-3 plug-in, TDA won't apply it to motion menus, even if you go to the trouble of giving it an AC-3 MPG clip to use as one.
I mean why not, what's the thinking behind that? It even goes to the trouble of converting it back to PCM, all the while it's happily converting PCM to AC-3 elsewhere on the DVD. Makes little or no sense to me.
So I went through the process of creating a DVD from VOB files. Then I saved the menu theme. Now when I'm doing a new DVD I can't load the theme! I see options for creating a new theme, which is clearly not what I want since I spent an hour on the old one. I simply want to load the old theme "template" if you will and make the modifications therefrom.
Hi there, Please point me to a place that has a file or a method that will stop all of DVD Author's endless/useless/incorrect "DVD Parameter" errors. There is nothing stopping my three set-top DVD's from playing SVCDs loaded onto DVD media EXCEPT for the fact that DVD Author refuses to do so. As it stands, I must dump them into Nero and play them like MP3s, rilley sad.
Warnings are fine, but what in the world was the good of "fatal error that DVD Author cannot ignore". Is this of benefit to ANYONE? Why not like every other error, just ask the user are they sure they want to continue?
Please eliminate all instances of "fatal error" with regard to DVD parameters, so that I can use this program.
The font for the chapter text on the menu does not have a drop shadow. I created some chapter titles in photoshop by adding them to the background image and putting the DVD-Author chapter boxes around them, and they worked but the highlighter didn't happen. Can I create chapter titles outside the program and still have them highlight when selected? It would be nice if DVD-Author had a wider style selection for text. Thanks.
The "title" has a drop shadow, but the chapters do not. I wish the chapters had a drop shadow as well, it would definitely help me in my selection for font colors!
Thats what I am looking for there might be a way to use rollover images from photoshop to highlight the photoshop image I just can't seem to figure it out.
I use this program to author all my dvds. However, I ran into an annoying problem.
When I author my dvds I use the main menu only and disable the option for chapter menus.
On the remote control that came with my dvd player there is a "title" button and a "root menu" button. I have a universal remote with only a "root menu" button. The only way I can get back to the menu while watching a clip is by pressing the "title" button. The "root menu" button does nothing. This means I can't get back to the menu with my universal remote. I tried the same thing with the software WinDVD and PowerDVD. I can't get back to the menu by clicking the root button, only the title button.
Every other authoring program works with the root button, but not TMPGEnc. I really want to use TMPGEnc because its the only software to let you create different title sets.
TMPGEnc DVD Author is a Multi-VTS-Application. So the First Menu of a DVD produced with this programm have to be a VMG-Menu, not a VTS-Menu.
VMG-Menus can only be reached by using "Title", there is no Way to use "Menu".
That's because a VMG can link to several VTS and any VTS can have it's own Root-Menu (but you have not created any VTS-Menu).
If you are using Track (chapter) Menus with TMPGEnc DVD Author, this Menus will be VTS-Menus which can be reached bei pressing the Menu-Button on your Remote.
Create Track Menus, use your own Design (edit). Remove the Chapters from the Menu-List (not from the Chapter-List!). You will have an empty Menu with a Back-Button to you First Menu (the VMG). Not realy an elegant way, but it should work.
Unfortunately there is a "contradiction" in the way you create your menus. The "root" menu is not the "root" for the total DVD, but more or less the root for the current content. If you press the button for root menu while you are watching a specific title, you would normaly get a chapter menu, as this is the "root" for the current titel. Therefore I think the only way to get around this problem is to use a chapter menu, where you have a button to return to the titel menu.
I used Tmpgenc and Tsunami Author to create a DVD+R master and sent it for professional replication by Denon Digital (Georgia, USA). Denon rejected the DVD master for replication and sent the following error info:
"Video Manager IFO and BUP files in the same ECC block"
"The DVD-Video specifications require that Video Manager Information file (VIDEO_TS.IFO) and its backup (VIDEO_TS.BUP) NOT be recorded in the same ECC block."
"...If the two files overlap within the same ECC Block, it is possible that if the ECC fails, it will cause both files to be unreadable".
"This problem is caused by the authoring system that created the image. It is the responsibility of the authoring system to ensure that these files do not overlap within the same ECC Block."
"With normal use, a disc may develop scratches and other physical defects over time. If an error should occur in the ECC Block where both of these files are recorded, then in may render both files unreadable. It is for this reason that this rule is set to Warning SEVERITY."
Hence the DVD was rejected for professional replication by Denon.
I offered to reauthor the DVD in Sonic, and Denon said yes to try that - they hadn't had any problems with professional replication of DVDs authored with Sonic. I reauthored in Sonic and this solved the problem. No red flags or even yellow flags.
Fortunately I had encoded the video using my default parameters in tmpgenc set up to exactly match the parameters required by Sonic authoring to prevent re-encoding by Sonic (those parameters are 8000kbps max, VBV=224, and more).
I prefer the versatility of TMPGEnc Author over Sonic, and home duplication of TMPGEnc Author DVDs has worked fine. But TMPGEnc Author apparently doesn't pass the test for PROFESSIONAL REPLICATION. The Denon plant is huge, cranking out hundreds of thousands of DVDs like "Lord of the Rings", Britney Spears, etc. - so I'm not talking about a local dupe house, but a facility the replicates DVDs for worldwide use.
Does anyone know the scoop here or have a solution? I want to use "Author" for my professional replication jobs, not Sonic. But for now, Author is out for that.
This happens only if you use the Burning Engine of TMPGEnc DVD Author. The use of an other Burnin' Application will prevent this.

I only use Verbatim DVD-R, Sony accepts those Discs for Replication.
I'm using the trial version of DVD Author and I've got a question regarding menu settings: Is it possible to create a 16:9 format main menu? Because creating a standard menu in TDA causes the menu on a 16:9 tv to shrink.
After reading some posts on this BBS about TEMPGEnc out of synchronization, I have seen that's the same problems of mine. My capture card is the Flyvideo98 and my video card is the 3D Phantom XP-3800 Pro with 64MB memory, OS Win 2K Pro, 40GB HD, AMD Athlon 1GB CPU, audio card PCI Avance (ALS4000). Programs I'm using: Power VCR II 3.0 SE, WindDVD, Nero, TMPGEnc DVD, Ulead movie factory and so on. Capturing from VHS in DVD NTSC 720x480 or DVD PAL 720x480 profiles, the resulting captured file is perfect. No problem with audio and video synchronization. But when using any authoring program to convert to VOB file, the standard for DVD profile, audio and video get out of synchronization. I have tried any single option on DVD format and no success. It seems the only format that has no problem is VCD format, but quality is very poor. And it's no sense having a DVD drive to burn DVDs and recorde files in VCD format. WinDVD has an option that gets no problem but resolution is only 352x288 and the result video is not so good. What one should do to have a good resolution without audio and video synchronization problem? What software(s) does the standard industry use? What are we simple mortals going to do? Any one has a good solution to put an end to this problem? Hope someone can answer. Seeo then
That's always a problem with those crappy MPEG2-Capture-Programs. They all are producing *shitty* MPEG-Streams with lot's of DTS/PTS-Problems.
That's not a problem for Software-Players, but DVD Athoring Tools do need propper Streams. Try Project X for demuxing and correcting you Stream, i bet, this will work.

Yes, of cause I know :-) I use it every day to demux my DVB captures. ProjectX alias X08 (former ds.jar) is a java application. Therefore it runs in every OS with a Java virtual machine. For Standard Windows get the JAVA Runtime from SUN: http://www.java.com/en/download/manual.jsp and install it on your computer.
Next, download a precompiled version of ProjectX from http://www.oozoon.de (not the EXE, but the http://www.oozoon-net.de/progs/projectx/ProjectX-v0.81.6-20040220.zip for example) Double-click on the jar file, accept the licence agreement (ProjectX is GPL) and click the register "main". I am having trouble downloading VirtualDubMod. One of the files (corona.dll) can't be read by my system after it is extracted because it is archived. How do I get my system to read an archived dll file?
I am getting this error as soon as TDA starts burning the movie to dvd. The authoring process goes smoothly. I have authored a few dvds in TDA that have burned ok. I am using Memorex & TDK -R blanks, both of which I have used previously with no problems. I authored the movie to a -RW first & had no problems, but when I tried to burn the same movie in TDA to a -R, I got the error message. I tried copying the -RW to a blank -R in another program & it copied but I got an "Invalid Disk" error when I tried to play it in a stand alone player. The -RW plays in the stand alone. I am confused about what the error means & how to correct it.
Movie was captured using an ATI All In Wonder 9000 Pro in the TV application. I don't understand why it burned to the RW but get the Invalid Unit Number errors when burnig to a -R. I even tried re-authoring the mpeg file & got the same error.
I'd appreciate any help/suggestions.
I presume that you are burning a .iso file, i had this exact problem and i solved it by creating a dvd folder instead of the .iso
You have four options for this.
1. Make your authoring program output to dvd folder.
2. Burn the iso to a rw disc and copy the disc to hdd using windows explorer
3. Use a tool like dvd shrink www.dvdshrink.org with no compression set and output to dvd folder (my personal favourite option)
4. Use a cd/dvd emulation program to mount the iso file as a virtual drive.
I have been trying to change the yellow color of the highlight (selection) in DVD Author after reading about the Hex Editor and changing the 44 44 to 33 33 blue and that is what I want, it worked, almost. This worked for the first two menu's but I cannot change the rest of them (6 menu's total 1 main and 5 with 6 chapter motion thumbs each) . They still show up as yellow. Anyone have any success with changing all of the menu's to have the highlight from yellow to another color?
OK, if you have more than one page for Chapters it is a little more complicated, as the bytes in the vob file are at different byte offsets from the beginning of the file. However this can be solved with vobedit (get it from Derrow: http://mpucoder.kewlhair.com/Derrow/index.html ).
Procedure:
Open the VTS_XX_0.vob with vobedit (open button in the lower left corner)
In the left window you see the "content" of the vob file. Double click on the first line 000000 [Navigation Pack] [VOB: 1]
A Hex Editor window pops up. Change the "44 44" bytes in the line 000000A0 to your preferred values like "33 33" and click "OK"
Back in the "Main Vobedit window" scroll down the left window until you find the next "[Navigation Pack]"entry. Double click on the line and change again the "44 44" in the Hexeditor at line 000000A0. Do this for all "Navigation Packs"
The changes are saved immediately.
After an hour of changing each one, and still not done, I have decided that it's just not worth it. I either need to make only a two menu(one main the other chapter)movie with TMPGEnc (the yellow is easy to change then)or accept the fact that I would have to do so much more work to get it to another color or use another program entirely. Thanks for your reply I was really happy to see the color change but don't have the patience or time to go through every navigational link and change the color on all the movies past menu 2.
Hopefully this color change will be something that TMPGEnc will add in the future. Otherwise I am really happy about the program but will be using another program until this is changed.
TMPGEnc, Thank you for making a really good program, love the motion thumbs that you don't have to render yourself and the GUI is also very nice. And thank you for the 30 fully functional free trial.

If you are still interested in this topic, there is a very fast possibility:
Use the hexeditor from nextsoft: http://download.nextsoft.de/hexedit.zip
It's German, but you can change the language to English if you like (menu: "Optionen"->"Einstellungen" click on the directory symbol, choose English. Close and restart the Hex-Editor)
Open your VTS_XX_0.vob file with this hexeditor. Use the search & replace function. Search for: "000000444473A0111173A00000000000"
replace with "000000333373A0111173A00000000000" (or whatever color settings you like instead of "4444") with the "replace all" option. Save the file. This takes no longer than half a minute.
Forgot to mention that I had to do this to the VIDEO_TS VOB file for the main menu highlight to change color and the VTS_01_0 VOB file for the rest of the chapters to highlight in the color that I want them to.
