TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4 BBS [ Sorted by thread creation date ]
hi there. i use taw4 quite a bit, and usually for me to author an mpg takes about 5-6 minutes. but yesterday and today, the authoring process has been very slow. 20 minutes some have taken, and some i have had to abort, but the estimated time was running into a couple of hours.
I really was somewhat enthusiastic about the availability of the english version of TAW5. So I immediately tried the new version with recordings (*.ts-files) of HD streams of german public broadcasting stations, which are 1280x720 50p. This streams should be fully bluray compatible. But my misgiving has become true, because TAW5 will full render all those files just in the same way TAW4 did with the exception of h.264 instead of Mpeg2. It would be good to know, why TAW thinks the streams are not compatible. Any suggestions to this (see video stream specifications below)? I will also ask Pegasys, but I don't expect them to be helpful.
Btw. DVR-Studio HD (www.haenlein-software.com) is able to produce blurays of my HD streams without reencoding, but this software has got a terrible UI and a useless menu editor).
So long,
Indy

Hello,
I would like to ask few questions:
1.Is it possible to encode DVD in less than 15 minutes.Because i have just made a dvd and it took only 13 minutes.
I remember it used to take 6 Hours? Is it possible that it is not encoding right?
2.Very important question.
I have got an AVI file which is not playable in Authoring works.I am not sure why.Keep crushing the Program. It seems is a codec program.
I can fine watch the video in bs player or any player.
It may be Authoring works can not access the right codec?
What should i do in this case?
Is there a way to see why Authoring works wont play it.
Media info will give me the info but it wont help me.I will post the info from media info.
Thanks
If your source file was DVD-compliant, then output will be very fast like you describe. You can tell if it is compliant if there is a blue "SR" logo on the thumbnail of the clip in the Source stage. Whenever that logo appears, it will be smart rendered and little to no re-encoding will occur.
Non-compliant video will be fully re-encoded to the DVD-Video standard, which can take a while depending on your system specs.
For your AVI, it sounds like it could be a codec problem.
What file reader is being used to open the file in TAW4? The clip properties screen shows the file reader being used under video properties. You can try using a different file reader to see if that fixes the problem.
To use a different file reader, go to Options-->Preferences-->Input Format List-->File Input Plug-in and uncheck the file reader being used to open the file. This will force TAW4 to use a different file reader and thus, a different codec.
Hi Thank you for your answer but the media info for the video i was able to encode in 14min is:
video divx3Low
947kbps 576/448 25fps Mpeg 4
Audio 128kbps 44.1khz 2ch MP3
The only problem is that the new dvd has no SOUND whatso ever and only buzzing.
Do you have any idea what that could be?
For the video that crashes the program media info is:
format avi
codec xvid
2054kbps 720/544 23.976fps Mpeg-4 Visual(Advanced Simple@L5)BVop1
audio Mpeg-1 layer3 115kbps 48kHz 2ch.
Thanks again
Hello,
It uses direct show codec but when i disable it i get a message cant lod video ,only Audio.
I have tried in premiere pro as well.It says codec not found ,supported.
I have ffdshow installed on my PC.
I still dont know how to fix this issue.
Under Video Matering works the file can not be open at all.It has only sound ,no video.
It seems that the video uses codec which is not on my pc even if i installed Divx .Xvid and ach/h264 Mpeg codec.
Can you help me?
Thanks
is there an easy way to convert a bluray hd project to a dvd sd project, so that chapter marks and menu information is retained?
i often create both types of project from the same material. i start by using vmw5 to create the hd and sd mpeg files. then amw4 to create a bluray hd project. am trying to avoid the pain of recreating the chapters and all of the menu text.
Easiest way might be to export/save the chapters as a keyframe list and then import the keyframe list into your DVD project. I don't think there's an easy way to retain the chapter names in the menu though.
>It depends on your definition of easy.

Thanks, I will give that a try. While I will still have to redo the menu text, if this preserves the chapter marks (i don't care about the chapter names) then it will be a big help.
Another way, albeit it not as convenient, would be to temporarily rename the bluray source file and then rename the sd source file to match what the bluray source file was. Assuming both source files are the same length, I would think all the chapter marks and names will be retained. Of course, you then have to adjust the output settings to match the new source. I think tkrave's suggestion is the best though...I have exported keyframes before and the imported them and it worked great.
Hi, i have Auth works 4 and was wondering if the offer of free Auth works 5 extends to existing customers of your product as there seems no mention o this in emails?
My impresson is that it is free for folks who buy AW4 on/after Feb 24. Likely a paid upgrade for others
See http://tmpgenc.pegasys-inc.com/en/press/12_0224.html
FWIW AW4 was a $60 upgrade for prior version owners.
Well I can tell you one thing I bought my version of AW4 9 days before the 24th Feb and they won't budge on me asking if they will reduce the cost when the time comes that AW5 is out, It's not like I bought it 18 months ago seems a bit unfair.

I purchased mine almost the same day as you and feel the same way. I emailed them about my feelings and, as yet, have received no reply. From the bad reviews on this latest version I probably won't upgrade anyway.
I have a DVD with 1 track in 1 title, with numerous chapters. Changing it to each chapter in its own track.
Source DVD has been copied, with chapters of course, to dvddata file on HD.
Select the source for Track 1 as DVD drive, load the title, and remove everything except first chapter.
On Track 2, select the DVD as source, then cut off both ends, leaving only the 2nd chapter.
Problem is, each time I do this the response time to Source Wizard - From a DVD, BD,... gets slower and slower, until it takes so long I close Authoring Works and re-open it.
Can't rename the .dvddata file to .mpg, because I lose the chapter information.
Use the split clip function in the cut-editor window instead. Just split at each chapter point, click "OK", then choose to keep all clips (blue and orange). This will create separate clips of all your chapters which you can then drag n' drop into other tracks.
I will NEVER buy this product until it gets up to date with the rest of the world and outputs to AVCHD and H/X264 AND smart renders losslessly of course.
Is there a lack of expertise with the Pegasys developers to handle the job in hand?
And a lot of the world is still quite happy doing DVDs.
You may have moved on. HOwever, they are in business to sell product at a profit> The question is what has their primary market done, and how many additional copies would they sell by adding the features you ask for now, as opposed to at some time in the future?
There is little reason to spend limited development resoruces on adding a feature that will not add corrsponding additional sales
Hm, I'm not quite sure about that. In my opinion Pegasys changed the name of their authoring solution from "DVD author" to the more general "Authoring Works" and added the term "bluray authoring" to their adds in order to sell additional copies to people who want to author blurays and not only DVDs. Fact is: bluray authoring with "Authoring Works" is almost impossible because of the missing support for h.264. For me MPEG-2 makes no sense on Blurays because of the lower efficiency compared to h.264 and because HDTV and avchd streams need to be converted, which consumes lots of time and quality. What really drives me crazy is that in my opinion the user interface of DVD Author / Authoring Works is one of the best on the market. I really would love to spend my money, if only h.264 would be supported...
The Japanese version of TAW5 is out and it has AVCHD and BD H.264 output and H.264 smart rendering. The English version should be coming soon. SO CHILL OUT.
I hope this becomes available soon for English market, I had a BSOD which rebooted the entire system while doing a conversion from AVCHD to DVD with the current 4.1.2.49 and I'd love to test the new version.
I must be doing something wrong or missed something, because each DVD I burn shows up in WMP with the name "Unknown DVD", and instead of what I named each of my tracks they are simply each and every one of them labeled as simply "Title 1", "Title 2", etc., and next to each "Title" it also lists a "Chapter 1", "Chapter 2", etc., when I didn't even add any chapters.
Can some one please help me to understand and hopefully fix this?

I have selected motion menu in the background editor and chosen a video file, which plays fine in the menu item editor, but does not show when I click OK and go back to the page editor. Nor does it show in simulation. I have checked motion menu under global menu settings too. A clue may be that there is a padlock showing next to 'background' on the left, but I can't find any way to 'unlock' it.
Also, I want text only buttons on the top menu, but picture buttons on the 'scene selection' menus. Is this possible?
If the background is locked, it sounds like you're using one of the pre-made templates. In that case, I don't think you can animate the background, only the thumbnails or whatever you add to menu yourself.
If you create a custom menu, you can edit and animate the background. Going the custom route also lets you choose a text-only layout for the top menu and a thumbnail layout for the track menus.
