Is there a simple way to create a DVD, and than and also make a Blu-ray from the same menu and source files (source files are already HD) without having to make a new project from scratch?
WHEN I USE THIS TO CONVERT I DONT GET ANY SOUND .
WOULD ANY ONE KNOW WHY AND HOW TO FIX?
I AM USING A NEW PC WITH WINDOWS 7.

Using Vista, Authoring Works 4 worked great and almost any file type could be imported. But I have now switched to a new computer with Windows 7 and the FLV files will not import (they worked perfect before). The FLV videos play fine with WMP, Real Player and other free player software. At the moment I'm having to convert them into MPEG using FLVconverter and then import into Author Works 4. Other than go back to an old computer, any ideas??
This is the way I convert an .flv file with TMPGEnc - YMMV
I use the following programs:
AutoGK 2.55 (also installs AviSynth)
QuickTime Pro (or VLC can be used) for audio conversion
FLV Extract 1.6.1 http://moitah.net/
DGAVCDec 1.09 http://www.videohelp.com/download/dgavcdec109.zip
use FLV Extract to demux the .flv
open the .aac audio file in QuickTime to create a .wav file
File > Export > Export: Sound To Wave > Options: (choose what you like)
now you have your .wav file
open the .264 video file in DGAVCDec
(learn how to choose your 'settings'...)
File > Save Project
now you have your .dga file
Save these 6 lines in notepad as an .avs file:
LoadPlugin ("C:\Program Files\DGAVC\DGAVCDecode.dll")
you can add features in this .avs file for exact control of your video:
BicubicResize (608,456)
Greyscale ()
AddBorders (16,12,16,12)
Trim (1236,35363)
FadeIn (12)
FadeOut (12)
and dozens of others.....
Keep all these files so far in the same folder.
TMPGEnc will now import the .avs file with all your editing features,
along with most other video programs that can handle an .avi import.
One of the few things you have to set is bitrate & quality. The added bonus
of an .avs file - you can drop it into other programs like VirtualDub
& all of your resizing, fading, bordering, etc... in the .avs - saving
you the time of having to reset everything in different programs.
I am a new to this authoring and would be glad if somebody will help me.
I like to have a menu werein I will have a first play of 10 sec. Three tracks
with each chapters and would go back to the track menu.

Greetings All. I installed Authoring Works 4 for the sole purpose of creating DVD-R's from non-encrypted DVD-RW source discs I have in the .VRO format (originally recorded on Sony Home DVD Recorder). Installation was easy and TMPGEnc has no trouble recognizing the disc and showing the disc's contents. However, when I attempt to create a file to my HDD, I don't get a standard DVD "TS" file. What I receive is a strange DVDDATA FILE that Windows XP does not recognize. The file carries this number (if it means anything):
I se that the file is 4.24gb, which means it transferred all the content of the DVD-RW intact, but I can't open or create a standard DVD-R from this type of file. What am I doing wrong? Any and all help is greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
The .dvddata files are just the copy of the DVD data that TAW4 uses for editing and outputting in lieu of streaming the data off of the DVD.
Are you trying to just transfer the same exact data from a DVD-RW to DVD-R? If so, that's not exactly what TAW4 was designed for. However, I suppose you could do it in a roundabout sort of way. You'd have to go through the entire TAW4 project process from Start to Output and then it will create the Video_TS/Audio_TS folders you're looking for.
As long as the video is in MPEG-2 format, output will be fast since it won't rerender (assuming it's DVD-Video compliant). You can also choose not to make a menu to skip that section as well.
tkrave, yes I am just trying to transfer the exact same data from DVD-RW to DVD-R. Doing the whole project process from start to output just produces the same result as stated originally. Do I do something with the DVDDATA file once it's created? Do you have a moment to walk me through the steps?
Does your DVD have a menu? If so, do you want to keep the menu? Passing the DVD through Authoring Works 4 will not preserve the menus.
How are you burning the content to the DVD-R? Are you using Authoring Works or some other program?
If all you see is a .dvddata file after going through the Output stage, then you're not doing it correctly or you're looking in the wrong place. Upon output, you'll have a Video_ts and Audio_ts folder. Pay attention to where your output folder is, it won't be the same place as the .dvddata file by default.
You can delete the .dvddata file after you've properly outputted.
Just thought I'd share my experiences of the past few days.
After using (and loving) TAW4 under 32-bit Windows XP for some time, I upgraded to 64-bit Windows 7. TAW4 installed just fine and works flawlessly - on NEW projects.
When I opened a project created under my old installation however, the only elements visible on the Menu pages were those I had added to the template myself (like extra text boxes). The backgrounds and buttons from the template itself were nowhere to be seen.
I had a hunch this was because the name of the programs directory has changed from "C:\Program Files" to "C:\Program Files (x86)" for 32-bit applications like TAW4.
Sure enough, when I copied TAW4's "Templates" directory:
"C:\Program Files (x86)\Pegasys Inc\TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4\Template"
...into another location...
"C:\Program Files\Pegasys Inc\TMPGEnc Authoring Works 4\Template"
...all of my old projects started displaying correctly again.
Seems that TAW4 doesn't know it should be using the %ProgramFiles(x86)% environment variable instead of %ProgramFiles% when it identifies that it's in a 64-bit environment.
Hopefully this work-around will help some folks until a fix can be made in later versions of this excellent software.
The DVD will have 4 tracks (4 independent video clips).
It will also have a short first play video separate from the clips.
I want a top menu following the first play clip with links to the four tracks.
Two tracks are to play the video directly with no separate track menu
Two tracks are to have a track menu with links to 5 chapter points in their video and a return button.
Each video will also have additional chapter points that are not linked to menu buttons, but used to allow faster navigation withthe skip button..
Can I do this with AW4? Not obvious from its highly strcuture process, tutorials, or Help files.
Yes, this is possible. The key is to use the Global Menu Settings to set which menu pages are displayed.
So your process would be to first create your menus as normal, then go to the Global Menu Settings and uncheck the track 1 and track 2 pages so they don't appear. Any chapter points you set will still work when playing the actual movie.
You can set almost anything (buttons, thumbnails, etc.) to either visible or invisible with the global menu settings.
Thanks. Your response helped me a lot in developing an undestanding of how AW4 works and solved my immediate issue as well.
As a previous user of Reel DVD, Encore DVD, and DVD LAB Pro, AW4 is rather different. The big diffence in Menu building appears to me to be the concept that AW4 gives a near complete starting point, and I remove, hide or inactivate rather than add items.
I think every encoding tool now uses H/X 264 for HD encoding except you lot, why is this? This is the only thing that is putting me off buying this software. I would like to have a few HD movies on 1 blu-ray disc, and am currently using mulitAVCHD for this, but its not as easy as Authoring works.

From a file -> browse where the new .m2v file is -> select Cut-edit and on that window I only see 2 frames (the star and end frame) and I don't see anything in the midle.
Am I doing something wrong ?

P.S: If I open the .vob anyway, on the Cut-edit window I can see the complete video.
Not sure if you're doing something wrong...I demuxed a vob and I was able to cut-edit the .m2v file just fine.
Have you tried it with other .vob files?
I don't think there's an easy way to do it, at least, I don't think there's a built in function for it in the menu editor.
The only way I can think of doing it, and this is just a trick (and a theory since I have not actually done it yet), is to make a button image where the bullet is same color as the background. So when the button does not have focus, you wouldn't see the bullet since it's the same as a background, but when it becomes highlighted, it would appear due to the color overlay of the highlight.
Like I said, that's just a trick and not a proper way of doing it, but there's just no official option to add bullets.
I have created & burned DVD-TV disc - for 16:9 HD.
Tech. info:
1.Videos were created from Photodex Producer as HD-1080i - MPEG-2 Video
2.The is was runt hru XPRESS 4.0 with several Filters output was MPEG-2, interlaced, 1440x816, frame rate: 29.97
3.These files were inserted into Authoring 4 - and Menu was created.
Tested several different settings, came up with one, which LOOK GREAT on TV (16:9 - HD flat screen) and DVD-player (very geneneric) at home.
Photos were sharp, colors same as on photographs, details were good - no pixelation.
(It look good on both Menus & the photo/slides)
Burned the DVD, thourougly checked it several times - it played also well on computers.
MAILED it TO CLIENT ... he called yesterday - result on his Office TV was a DISASTER !!! - Blurred photos, colors distorted toward yellow, details blending into patches, even the Menu was blurred ...
QUESTION #1:
WHY it is playing so good on one TV with DVD player - on so horrible on other??

HOW to find some "generic" settings ??
Can your client try it on some other TV? I don't see how it can play well on your TV and computer but not display properly on their TV. The only thing I can think of is that their DVD player is not decoding the video properly.
Did you change any track settings in Authoring Works 4? By default, the settings are pretty standard/generic so there shouldn't be any problems with the settings as long as they weren't changed.
My client said, he will try it on more DVD & TV at home.
(He said, he's got about 6 (six) (!!!) of them there...)'
As for your quote: "I don't see how it can play well on your TV and computer but not display properly on their TV. " ... that was my assumption, that once it will play on our ($25- 1 year old) DVD player - it will play without problem anywhere else.
As for "settings" - I'm very much novice to any tranfer from: "Computer-to-TV" jargon or terminology.
I did about 25 different settings (about 25 hours - 3 days) ... (well documented on paper, especialy ones, they did NOT work....) - untill I've got one setting , which worked well on OUR TV/DVD PLAYER.
I'm baffled and confused .... Is this MY problem,(some sttings not done properly ... is this CLIENT problem - something changed on HIS TV/PLAYER ....
... until this will be sorted / solved / discovered "HOW & WHY" ...
regardless how my Slideshows/Photoshows are GREAT ...
I do not dare to approach another potential customer - for fear of getting same response / reaction again ...
Did you save this project? Can you open it up again in Authoring Works 4 and tell me what the track settings are?
To find out the track settings, go to the Source Stage and in the track list on the left side of the window, click on the "Settings" button for your track(s).
A new window should open. Click on the "Video" tab. If you've changed any of these settings, list what you've changed. Likewise for the "Audio" tab.
If you haven't changed anything, then the problem might be something else.
What type of connection is he using between the DVD player and the TV?
There is a very wide range of playback and display quality depending on the the players, the make and model of set, any upscaling implemented, and the type of connection (RF, composite, s-video, component, HDMI). What looks good on one combinationmay not look good on another. Also, folsk who have gotten used to HD material will fond SD material looks, well, poor. Viewing via a RF or composite connction is about the worst, especially if the color space pushes the limit of the TV standard.
