My captures from my Hauppage card are 704x480 (broadcast D1) MPEG2. When I try to re-encode them in TMPGEnc to a lower bitrate (using 2-pass VBR) TMPGEnc will hang after a few hours, making no progress. This is during the analyze phase. This doesn't seem to happen if I choose 720x480 or 352x480 for the output, but I would prefer to keep the resolution unchanged during the conversion. What settings should I be using?

i am able to cut a particular part of 4 min in TMPGEnc-2.521.58.169-Plus but it had a problem only video was there no audio but when i cut a small part of 0.27sec it had audio so please help me in this matter

Is it VOB, is the audio Ac3?
If so you won't get audio in the output.

I am trying to re-encode a dvd that was too big, have used smartripper and then dvd2avi which leaves me with a .d2v and a .wav file. However when i try to re-encode I get absolutely no sound, even the previews are soundless?? When finished i am left with an mpeg that plays perfectly(with no sound) and an additional .wav file that plays fine but can't seen to get them in the same place at the same time! Any help would be greatly appreciated as this is driving me up the wall!!

Are you saying that after importing the wa into TMPG that you have no audio resulting in the MPEG?

Try raising the priority of the 'WAV reader' in the VFAPI plugins.

You can check your audio by clicking the audio tab in advanced settings.

At the end of the encoding i have a completely separate soundless mpeg and a new .wav file, both of which play fine. Could this be something to do with the bitrate of the .wav file that is keeping them separate?? When testing the audio i do get sound but the preview has no sound. Have tried upgrading the priority of the wav reader but still no joy...

LOL...now I realise what you have done.
You have created elementary files for importing into a DVD authoring program.
If you are creating a DVD just import both files into your authoring software.

The next time you use the wizard make sure you select 'CBR MPEG-1 layerII audio(mp2)' from the drop down menu this will give you a combined Video and Audio MPEG.

This is not a TMPG problem this is a DVD2SVCD issue. Go to that forum for advice.

It seems that the method of CQ that you are using needs to do a test run to determine the parameters to set.
If you don't want it to happen then use CBR as the encoding method.

want to make a DVD 2.5 hours in length by converting some avi files I have to the "low resolution" dvd ntsc standard. I understand how to get the resulting mpeg2 files-but how do I burn them? all burning programs i've seen set the 2 hour limit. will my set-top dvd player play a dvd with just an mpeg burned on it? what if i wanted to create menus and chapters etc?

There is no 2 hour limit, there are only dump Authoring-Programs. Most of my DVDs are filled with up to 5 or more hours of Video, that's absolutly nor problem.
Try TMPGEnc DVD Author or DVDLab for creating and burning your DVDs.

It is impossible with TMPGEnc DVD Author, a specific source file has to be created. With TMPGEnc Plus, choose a still image as video source file and a wav sequence as an audio source. Encode in mpeg program stream format with sound in mp2 and use the resulting file as background. Disable the background option, the first image (still image) remains and the BGM only is played.

On the motion menu options, there is a checkbox for that option.

Uncheck the use additional item, but then be sure to check use BGM on the same screen. I don't have the screen in front of me right now, so I can't tell you exactly what it says.

When I select an mpg-file as menu background, I'm forced to select an
image from that mpg-file, but I want to keep my jpg-image, I just want the
audio stream out of this mpg file!

Then use the image you want as your background as part of the mpeg file that contains the music you also want. I use tmpgenc plus to create the mpg file with the background image and music i choose.

I've been playing with TMPGenc Plus (2.521.58.169) and its great! I mainly use it for converting HD (1289x720) M2T files to AVI for use in a film compositing package (Combustion).
I've noticed that it uses my elecard mpeg encoder, is there a way to change what I assume to be its default encoder?
I have recently discovered VLC mpeg player (its very fast)and looks gorgeous, can I make the VLC encoder work with TMPGenc?

TMPGEnc IS an Encoder and does not use an other. Your Elecard-Thing is a DEcoder (only for Playback), and it's trail periode is over, eh?

If you have problems to open MPEG2 with TMPGEnc, try mme (google: mme +vfapi)

Yes and as B_racer already told you that means that your the Elecard codec is being used to decode the file not encode it.

Every movie file needs a codec to decode it so it can be played back. Yours is using the Elecard codec for decoding MPEG2.

You don't seem to be getting the message!

TMPG is already an encoder that uses it's own internal MPEG2 encoding codec.
That's why it's called an encoder. You CANNOT use an external codec for encoding!

Why would you want to anyway? TMPG is one of the best quality encoders around.

I want to convert a b&w TV show from DV AVI to MPG1, and thought there'd be an option to convert to greyscale somewhere... is there? Reason: The resulting MPG would be smaller if it contained greyscale data only, rather than being a colour MPG containing just b&w footage? Or am I way off base here? :)

I don't think MPEG 1/2 supports greyscale data only.
There are only two colour space profiles available with TMPG that's 4:2:0 and 4:2:2
If there is a colour cast being added to the MPEG you can remove it with the colour settings, but as for producing greyscale only I think your out of luck.

Hi Ashy, I just found the solution:

Advanced
Custom Color Correction
Add
Mode = Saturation
Type = YUV
Saturation level = -255 (0 = default).

This changes the output MPG from color to B&W -- woohoo! :)
However, I did a test and the output size is the exact same
as a color version, so there's no real need to use it when
converting an already B&W AVI to MPG... all it would be doing
is adding filter time to the entire process. Useful to know
for changing color AVIs to B&W, though. :)

I have tried to convert AVI to MPEG but cannot get any audio on any of the files i convert, i am assuming this is to do with compression but have not got a clue how to go about fixing it, any suggestions will be welcome

Are we talking about the audio on a DVDvideo or DVDaudio?
If it's the former then you can use VOB2AUDIO to rip the audio to a wav or Mp3.

I've looked around on the forums for this and there have been numerous problems with the audio being out of sync, I've tried some of the suggested solutions but without luck.

The original AVI that I am trying to rip to be put on DVDr is in sync.

When I extract the audio from a movie (big wav file) it is the same length as the length of the film. But I get an error at first saying

"VirtualDub has detected an improper VBR audio encoding in the source AVI file and will rewrite the audio header with standard CBR values during the processing for better compatibility. This may introduce up to 6042 ms of skew from the video stream. If this is unacceptable, decompress te entire audio stream to an uncompressed WAV file and recompress with a constant bitrate encoder. (bitrate: 115.7 +/- 11.1 kbps)"

what I do then go to full processing mode and save as WAV in VirtuaDub. Then in TMPGenc use the AVI as the source and the new wav file as. It's then out of sync, I think it starts off out of sync and gradually gets worse. I've tried to edit the file size in Adobe Audition as I read in other posts on this forum to stretch it using Cool Edit, but searching google said that it's now Adobe Audition. I don't know if you can use this? I did find the stretch option in this program but wasn't sure what to compress it as, or what settings to change. I found one where it mentions to choose a manual fps, so I changed that to 29.97 as that's what it says it is in virtuadub. But that just made it worse.

So what is a constant bitrate encoder? Is this what I need to do, use some other software to recompress the WAV in the bit rate of 115.7 +/- 11.1 kbps? Can someone help explain for me how to do this using a reccomended piece of software. Thanks

Virtualdub cannot handle VBR MP3 correctly. You will need 'Virtualdub MP3 Freeze' to do the job properly.

Of course you will still have a wav file.

The point is that it will no longer be out of sync.
'Virtualdub MP3 Freeze' is specially made to handle VBR mp3 'Virtualdub' is NOT.
If 'Virtualdub MP3 Freeze' does not work then NANdub will and if that doesn't then it must be a problem with the audio itself.

In that case you will have to find how much delay has been introduced by simply reloading the wav back into Virtualdub with the avi and then use the delay correction option.
