Question - TE40 - WMV ecnoding sloooow No.58243
Martin Cleaver  Home )  2008-06-25 19:53:20 ( ID:kstvbk0ogig )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

I am trying to recode 30 minutes of Full-HD .mts (Panasonic AVCHD - 3.3 GB) as WMV and it takes about 11 hours. :-( Surely this is a little over the top?
I note that .wmv is the only video I can work with on my Intel Core 2 machine with 4 GB of memory. Anything else just judders and jars.
I first used a bitrate of 8000 instead of the default of 1000, but am now trying 4000 deinterlaced. However I can leave my machine on for several weeks if I want to transcode everything. Is there a better way?
(Sorry if this is a dupe, but this forum interface is the least intuitive I have seen in years. I feel like I'm back in the Fidonet era! :-)
Martin

It could simply take that long.
I converted a 6 second full HD .m2ts file to WMV (default settings: bitrate of 1000, 1pass CBR) just to see how long it would take. It took 1 min 41 seconds. Doesn't sound long, but for a six second video, that's a long time.
Then again, I'm only on a Pentium4, so that's probably not helping.

Jev  2008-07-15 21:03:36 ( ID:mdj0xn9hx36 )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Martin,

It is taking exactly as long as it is supposed to. I have a Quad Core for my setup and it takes me anywhere from 5 to 8 hours to convert a movie to VMWHD. The problem isnt their software, but the way Microsoft does their WMV encoding. It is by far the slowest convertor that I have seen these days. I don't know why, it is just like that. So don't feel bad, I have heard of other people needing over 24 hours to do a conversion.

mevans336  2008-11-05 21:54:30 ( ID:qhpjqhr0ekm )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Unfortunately, that's how long it takes. I'm in the process of ripping/converting/upscaling my DVD collection to 1280x720 (720p) using WMV9AP (it has the best output over all other WMV codecs, even WMV9) and it takes 24 hours or so on my Quad Core Q9300 w/ 2GB of RAM .... per DVD.

On my Dual Core E6750 it took just over 48 hours per DVD.

XViD and H.2764 just don't provide the same quality for streaming to my XBox 360 since they are limited to 4GB in size.

Question - TE40 - AVI to MPEG2 No.58241
Doc Miller  2008-06-25 19:06:55 ( ID:g.xw/nzbinl )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

I am using TMPGEnc to convert from AVI to MPEG2 so I can build DVDs from these files. For some reason the resulting MPEG2 files are much larger. The AVI files are ~300M and the MPEG2 files are 700M-1GB. Since MPEG2 is compress and lossy I would expect them to be smaller.

I have gone directly from AVI to MPEG2 and am also considering going from AVI->VirtualDub->AviSynth->TMPGEnc->MPEG2.

Thanks in advance!

tkrave  2008-07-01 01:09:56 ( ID:lgrl8ryjzyl )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

What are the attributes of the AVI file? Resolution, framerate?

I'm thinking that the only way the DVD-compliant MPEG-2 could be bigger is if the AVI files are worse than DVD quality.

Question - TDA3 - do TDA3 re-encode MPEG-2 file again when create DVD? No.60606

I'm affraid so...

tkrave  2008-06-30 20:24:46 ( ID:lgrl8ryjzyl )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Actually, it depends on the source files. If your MPEG file is already DVD-compliant, it will not re-encode unless it's too big for the media. To easily check to see if your clips will re-encode or not, look for the "SR" or "FR" icon in the Source stage of the program. The icon will be next to the thumbnail of your clip in the source list. SR stands for Smart Rendering, which is what you are looking for, and will only re-encode edited sections of your clips, making output much faster. If you see the FR icon, then that means Full Rendering and your whole clip will be re-rendered.

tkrave  2008-07-09 18:52:15 ( ID:lgrl8ryjzyl )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Just to add some info...
If you mix aspect ratios in a track, then the non-matching aspect ratios will be re-encoded.
For example, if you have 2 16:9 clips and 1 4:3 clip in a single track, then the 4:3 clip will be fully re-encoded (to add black bars at the sides).

To avoid this, create two tracks, one for your 16:9 clips, and one for your 4:3 clips. Then all clips will be Smart Rendered.

Does 4.0 support blueray mkv encoding to divx or any other format? If so why wont it allow me to import it as a source file. but will allow a 1920x1080 wmv file as a source. The result of this encode is wonderful, but will I only be able to use wmv and not blueray mkv?

tkrave  2008-06-30 20:03:27 ( ID:lgrl8ryjzyl )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Try downloading the latest trial version which was released on June 26. It's supposed to have Blu-ray support.

Question - TE40 - Changing aspect ratio for all clips No.58238
Patryk  Home )  2008-06-23 16:40:03 ( ID:3vvpalb4f3r )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Whenever i bring 1440x1080 HDV clip to the program it reads it correctly as 16:9. Unfortunately when rendered to QT it creates black bars on top and the bottom so to work around it i force the program it present the clip as 4:3 -- that gets rid of the black bars... But when i bring in loots of clips they all read 16:9 and i have to manually set their aspect ratio -- can i just highlight all clips and do it just a few clicks or do i have to do it manually one clip at a time?

Question - TDA3 - Menu picture No.60602
wapanap  2008-06-21 20:46:29 ( ID:dwrmpgibwgh )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

I'm a little confused as to how one selects a picture for a track on the menu. Is there any way of selecting a still picture from the track itself?

tkrave  2008-06-30 20:34:03 ( ID:lgrl8ryjzyl )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Yes, this is possible.
In the Menu Stage, go to the Page Editor tab and double-click on the thumbnail you want to change.
The Menu Item Editor window should appear.
Move the playhead to the frame you want to appear as your thumbnail image and click on the "Set as start frame" button (it's the button with the downward arrow).
The blue bar indicating the active frames should change once you click on that button.
That's it! This frame will now appear in your menu, but when you play the clip, it will start from the beginning.

Setting the start and end frames can be used in conjunction with the motion menus as well in case you only want a certain section of the clip to play as the menu thumbnail.

Change the encoding to UTF-8 if you can.

Moha  2008-07-31 08:19:09 ( ID:w2hgv4qk50f )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

tkrave, how to do so please?

tkrave  2008-08-02 02:45:58 ( ID:lgrl8ryjzyl )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

You can change the encoding with a text editor. A nice one I like using is called EmEditor. You can download a free trial of it here: http://www.emeditor.com/

Once it's installed, you can open the .srt file with EmEditor, then select "Save As..." in the File menu. In the Save As window, there is a drop-down menu where you can select UTF-8 encoding.

I am having the same problem and just submitted a request for tech support. What are the details of your problem? The program hangs for me when trying to convert a 9GB AVCHD file to MPG-2 DVD format. It finishes through the analyze step and then hangs when it starts the writing the file output. It works fine for smaller files. I'm running Vista with 4GB of memory and 500GB of free HD space. Intel Duo 2 Core process. The computeris more than up to the task ofsupporting this type of workload.

Question - TDA3 - Few Questions About TMPGEnc DVD Author 3.0 With Divx Authoring No.60592
Someone  2008-06-21 15:37:46 ( ID:0dwmbwtzv7o )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

I Just tried TMPGEnc DVD Author 3.0 With Divx Authoring and I have
a few questions about it.

What does it transcode the video for?
Can't it just author the DivX files without encoding them?
and another thing...
Why does the only subtitles language it support is English?

Regards.

tkrave  2008-06-30 20:18:58 ( ID:lgrl8ryjzyl )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

If your video is too big, it will transcode it to fit your target media (dl dvd, single layer dvd, etc.).

DivX DVDs will always be re-encoded because of the DivX Ultra file structure and the fact that "Smart Rendering" can't be applied to DivX files. A DivX Ultra DVD is basically one huge file which includes the tracks and menus. So it will take all of your separate clips and re-encode them together even if your clips are already in DivX format.

Not sure about the subtitles.

Question - TDA3 - [Command = 2a] [Sense:ASC:ASCQ = 03:73:03] No.60591

When I get round to burning the image to a dvd it starts for 8 seconds, then the error sign

[Command = 2a] [Sense:ASC:ASCQ = 03:73:03]

shows up. Does anyone know what this means and how to fix it?

Question - TE40 - Fitting 1:40 Video to a Single Layer DVD No.58234
randygodwin  2008-06-16 15:35:49 ( ID:p/rusgorznl )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Will TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress compress a 1hr 40min video on to a single layer DVD?

tkrave  2008-06-18 18:17:28 ( ID:lgrl8ryjzyl )   [ Delete / Reply with quotation ]

Yes, there are bitrate settings that you can adjust upon selecting the DVD output template. You can select what type of media you have (in your case, single-layer DVD) and then set the percentage of the media capacity. TMPGEnc 4.0 XPress will automatically adjust the audio and video bitrate to fit your target percentage.
